Introduction to Heelo

About the class...

The SDMTC is proud to be hosting an Introduction to Heelo: The Filipino Massage at our 2025 event.

This class will solely focus on massage techniques derived from hilot, ashiatsu, and thai stretches. It will emphasize the manipulation and massage techniques to promote therapeutic outcomes.

Incorporating Hilot in Heelo is essential for several reasons: cultural appreciation, holistic healing, and versatility. Although we respect and appreciate the elements of Hilot, this class has been adapted to fit the classroom and professional massage setting. Meaning that we will NOT be using banana leaves, herbal remedies, or specific rituals that are traditionally used.

By integrating Heelo into our practice, we can offer a unique and deeply therapeutic experience that acknowledges and respects the rich traditions of Filipino healing. Let’s explore this beautiful art together and learn how to incorporate its principles into our massage therapy practice.

About Rhonda...

Rhonda Larkins from St. Louis, Missouri is a passionate and dedicated massage therapist. She is half Filipino, half Panamanian and integrates her cultural heritage into her practice.

Her massage journey started in 2003 after she herniated a disc which led to a lumbar laminectomy in 2004. During rehab, she received her first professional massage. This experience inspired her to start her massage education in 2005. However, her back pain made it challenging, until she discovered Ashiatsu, a barefoot massage technique. This was a huge turning point for her career.

Rhonda is a member of the World Massage Festival, which provides a strong sense of community and shared energy. She encourages all her students to travel, take classes, and have fun. This experience is invaluable for personal and professional growth.
